Resumen:
-
The Prestige
tanker caused a big oil spill off the
Galician coast (north-west Spain)
in November 2002. To monitor the oil spill, in
addition to visual observations of the spill on the
sea surface from aircraft and ships, space-borne radar
has proven to be a useful tool due to its
large coverage, day and night and all-weather capability. This
paper discusses the Prestige oil spill
detection and monitoring by using Envisat ASAR images. The work
is divided into two main steps. First, a
simple processing method was applied to two consecutive ASAR
images acquired in December 2002 in order
to detect possible oil slicks. The main problem was the
discrimination between real oil slicks
and similar radar signatures, as the dark patches due to the
presence of culture rafts over the sea surface. Next, the
results were integrated into a GIS database
jointly with wind data and visual observations with the
aim of studying the spatial distribution
and the evolution of the oil slicks between both days. Moreover,
reliable values for the speed and
direction of the oil slicks displacements were obtained without
using complicated models or additional
data.

Resumen:
-
Periodic blooms of Pseudo-nitzschia spp. in Galician coastal
areas have caused virtual collapse of ecosystems with
accompanying serious economic impacts. the aim of this work is
the study of the physical enviroment of a coastal system
correlating different bands of MERIS data with in situ Pseudo-nitzschia
spp data provided by the Marine Environment Quality Control
Centre (CCMM) during a study period associated to blooms of this
specie related to coastal upwelling events (May-June 2003). This
work tries to establish the foundations for the future
development of algorithms for the study of the primary
production and the identification of Pseudo-nitzschia spp toxic
blloms in coastal waters case II making use of the great
potential of the FR MERIS products, with high spatial and
spectral resolution. The study is a part of the ESA project
AO623, which is intended to study changing shorelines-beaches
seasonally and anually, together with suspended matter
discharged into coastal waters and pigments related to algae
blooms.

Resumen:
-
The Atlantic coast of Portugal, to the sotuh of Porto, was
formed during the Holocene (Rodrigues and Dias 1989) by the
accumulation of sand deposits derived principally from the north.
this created a linear coast aligned at an angle of 15º to the
east of north. the main aim of this work was the study of the
physical environment of the offshore system ysing AVHRR data to
examine sea surface temperatures (SST) in the Aveiro region
(Portugal), in order to identify, during 1999, the Portuguese
coastal upwelling.

Resumen:
-
An european project has been carried out (from January 01 to
August 01) under the tittle "Pelagic fischeries in Sctolnad (UK)
and Galicia (Spain): observer studies to collect fishery data
and monitor by-catches of small cetaceans". In Galicia, these
studies provide an opportunity to evaluate the success of the
multi-task observer protocols for collecting a variety of data
on fishing activities on-board common fishing vessels. all
collected data are spatially structured and integrated into a
GIS, aiming its analysis in telatio to oceanographic factors
such as sea surface temperature values (from NOAA-AVHRR) and
chlorophyll-a concentration indexes (from SeaWiFS). In this work,
data and results corresponding to Galician coast are presented.
